The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has launched SuRIA Home, a solar rebate offering Malaysian domestic users up to RM3,000 for installing rooftop solar under the Solar ATAP scheme, backed by a RM150 million allocation.
The announcement, reported by Bernama, positions SuRIA Home as a way to make rooftop solar more affordable for ordinary households while supporting the country's wider energy transition goals. The rebate complements the savings homeowners already gain from generating their own electricity.
How much homeowners get
Under SuRIA Home, eligible domestic users receive RM600 for every 1 kWac of declared installed capacity, up to a maximum of RM3,000. A system of about 5 kWac therefore qualifies for the full rebate, while smaller installations receive a proportionate amount. As detailed by The Edge Malaysia, the programme is expected to benefit a substantial number of Malaysian homes.
Who administers and pays it
The Solar ATAP programme is executed by PETRA, regulated by the Energy Commission, with SEDA Malaysia acting as the Implementing Agency. The SuRIA Home rebate itself is administered and paid by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), which transfers the rebate directly into the eligible customer's own local bank account after the system is commissioned and verified. Programme details are published on the SEDA Malaysia and myTNB portals.
Limited allocation
The RM150 million allocation funds the rebate on a first-come, first-served basis until 31 December 2026, or until the allocation is fully used up — whichever comes first. Because the pool is finite and the rebate is not guaranteed, households interested in going solar are encouraged to begin the assessment process early rather than waiting until close to the deadline.
What homeowners should do next
To benefit from SuRIA Home, a household needs a rooftop solar system installed and commissioned under Solar ATAP within the programme period, and must meet the eligibility conditions for the rebate. The practical first step is a free assessment of your roof, electricity usage and TNB account to confirm whether you qualify and to size an appropriate system. From there, the installation is designed, fitted and commissioned with TNB, after which an eligible customer can receive the rebate. SuRIA Home handles the installation and guides homeowners through each stage, while the rebate itself remains a matter between the eligible customer and TNB.
